LOS ANGELES -- Oscar-winning actress Julie Andrews has been named as the
recipient of the Screen Actor's Guild's highest honor.The Guild announced
Monday that Andrews, the star of such classics as "Mary Poppins"
and "The Sound of Music," will receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement
Award at the organization's 13th annual awards gala in January
.gJulie Andrews is a woman of great generosity, creativity, courage, elegance
and wit," said SAG president Alan Rosenberg said in a statement. "She
embodies and transcends the memorable roles she has created.
Julie has been a positive presence in my life and continues to inspire
multiple generations.
"Rosenberg said that the 70-year-old acting legend is "genuinely
touched and thrilled to be receiving an award from her fellow actors.""I
have assured her the honor is ours,g Rosenberg said.Andrews was already
a Broadway legend when she made her feature film debut with "Mary
Poppins" in 1964. The film earned her a Best Actress Oscar. She was
nominated for Best Actress again for playing Maria Von Trapp in the 1965
Best Picture Oscar winner, "The Sound of Music."Over the years
Andrews also has starred in such hits as "Torn Curtain," "The
Americanization of Emily," "Victor/Victoria," "10"
and "Star!"Most recently, she starred in "The Princess Diaries"
and its sequel, and voiced the role of Queen Lillian in the computer-animated
blockbuster "Shrek 2." She will also be voicing the character
for the film's sequel, which will be released in May 2007.Also a best-selling
children's author, Andrews has been married to legendary director Blake
Edwards for 37 years. They have five children and seven grandchildren.Andrews
also received honors as a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth
II on New Yearfs Eve 1999 for Lifetime Achievements in the Arts and Humanities,
and was also named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2001.The 13th annual Screen
Actors Guild Awards celebration is set to take place Jan. 28 in Los Angeles
and will air on TNT and TBS.
